Belly Of The Beast
Belly Of The Beast - Black Point Fissures, Mono Lake. The Black Point Volcanic cone was formed under the waters of Mono Lake approximately 13,600 years ago. Back then in the Pleistocene, Mono Lake was going through a glacial period, and It has been theorized that while the lake was covered with ice, the ice cap itself contributed to the very rapid cooling of the ejected material which formed the fissures, and also created the very flat appearance of Black Point's volcanic cone. Now in our present day, Black Point is high and dry above the Mono Lake water line, and can be explored first hand with hiking boots rather than diving gear.
